Carole A Sheldrake

My figurative ceramic/mixed media work is based on a close interest in and observation of the characteristics and gestures of human beings. I use a variety of clays and fire at diverse temperatures, building the pieces up in very thin layers of clay and assembling them in a delicate patchwork to create the form. The surfaces are layered with coloured slips, wax resists, stencils, oxides, ceramic transfers and glazes, sometimes firing several times and smoking to achieve subtle effects. I construct tin, copper, pewter and sometimes glass additions to develop the individuality and character of each piece.
