Val Fricker

I studied Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture and Photography at the West of England College of art in the 1960's. From 1975 to 1990 I concentrated on painting traditional watercolour landscapes, still life and life studies.

Living and working in the USA from 1990 to 1993 transformed my direction. I was experimenting and began to produce more abstract paintings. Vividly coloured, strange desert landscapes in New Mexico and Arizona induced a sense of freedom. On returning to the UK in 1993, the US experiences permeated 3D reliefs, prints and paintings.

In 1994 I moved to Rye Harbour and was re-introduced to the subtle tones and textures of British landscapes. Reflected light from the tidal River Rother and diffused rays of light breaking through sea mists, together with undulating shingle banks, are all references to be found in my work.

Collected driftwood, sea-washed bones, feathers, flotsam and jetsam, recycled materials are used to create 3D assemblages and mixed media work.

Large scale and small sketches in line and watercolour provide constant references and are the backbone of observation for all other branches of work.
